Low water still hampering Rhine and Danube shipping in Germany

16-04-2014.

Dry weather caused low levels on Danube river, preventing cargo vessels from sailing fully loaded in some rivers in Germany. This increased transport costs.

Fully loaded vessels have problems since 2nd hald of March, as river levels have been low. This situation continued in beginning of April and make difficulties for shipping grains. Danube river is main transport way for East European grains to reach West EU. Mostly shipments of  corn (maize).
