Serbia: Maize exports down to standstill

13-03-2013.

Export of maize from Serbia came to standstill in period January - February. Exports completely stopped because of high aflatoxin contamination of  maize. Serbia was in top 10 of world maize exporters but with aflatoxin contamined maize this year exports will be ruined.

In February, Serbia's maize exports totalled 16,000 tonnes, which is ten times less than a year earlier, while the price of maize dropped. Reports for elevated concentration of aflatoxin in the Serbian agricultural products resulting from the extensive drought last year appeared at end of 2012. The drop in the maize exports could negatively affect Serbia's foreign trade activities since maize is the country's biggest agriculture export item. In 2012 Serbia exported 2.2 million tonnes of maize worth USD 572 m, according to data from the state statistics office.
